Morwell Swimming Club 60th Anniversary Celebration and Reunion

- Celebrating 60 years of the Morwell Swimming Club -

Over 90 people dived in to celebrate the Morwell Swimming Club’s 60th Anniversary Reunion on Sunday 15th October, at the Morwell Bowling Club.

Guests travelled from Queensland, Western Australia and throughout Victoria, to attend the celebration and reunite with old friends that many had not seen for 40 to 50 years.

The event was opened by Melissa Scholes, who presented a timeline of events over the last 60 years, including the Morwell Outdoor Pool opening on 14th December 1957, the first swimming carnival on 18th January 1958, and the opening of the Morwell Leisure Centre in early 1994.

Latrobe City Mayor Kellie O’Callaghan attended the event, and welcomed the guests to the celebration.

In true swimming style, guests were called up to the buffet in “heat” and “lane” order and enjoyed the two course buffet provided by the Morwell Bowling Club, who is the Morwell Swimming Club’s major sponsor.

Event organiser, Melissa Scholes, said the event was a huge success. “People were exchanging contact details and sharing some wonderful memories of the Swimming Club and of each other. Everyone just kept smiling and taking photos all day. I was proud to be able to organise the reunion and see so many happy faces,” said Ms Scholes.

Current club members set up a large history display on the day, which included many photos, newspaper articles, club uniforms, team pennants, district shield winner pennants, and the complete collection of Morwell Swimming Club perpetual trophies and shields.

Ms Scholes said, “Guests had photos taken of themselves holding trophies that they had won, and looked for their faces and names in the articles and photos on display. Many of the guests were top swimmers in the district during the 1960’s-70’s, including Bill Dykes – the first Gippsland swimmer to break the minute for the 100m freestyle.”

A large cake donated by former swimmer, Alan McAuliffe, was cut by Robyn Alexander (Duncan), Suzi Duncan, Yolande Evans (Hall) and Robin Baker, who are children of three of the founding members of the Morwell Swimming Club; Life Members Ilma Duncan, Frank Hall and Reg Baker.

“I would like to thank the Morwell Historical Society for their assistance to locate 3 of our members to ensure that all our Life Members and their families were invited to the event. I was also able to collect a photo of each of our Life Members (18 in total), and this is a very valuable piece of history for our club, and for Morwell,” said Ms Scholes.

The Morwell Swimming Club would like to thank the following businesses for their support of the event; Morwell Bowling Club, Triangle Trophy Centre Moe and Pazzaz Printing Morwell. Thank you to the following businesses for the generous raffle prizes; Frame By Frame Moe, Betta Home Living Moe, Intersport & Inland Surf Traralgon and Bunnings Morwell.
